We ALMOST saved $3,000 per year

I was so excited when DH brought a copy of National Guard Publication home, and I read an article on TRICARE benefits extending to National Guard families. I was thrilled. I the Queen of Frugality, started to crunch numbers in my head. We currently spend a little over $500 a month of health insurance for our family. The fee proposed by TRICARE, is $253 per month for our family. I was thrilled, at the $3,000 savings per year. I mean, I was literally jumping up and down thrilled. I was dreaming of paying off a credit card, and buying a new mattress.

I also couldn't wait to tell the readers here at SpouseBuzz about such a great benefit. We can all use tremendous savings.

But then....

Wah Wah Wah....

  • The 2007 National Defense Authorization Act mandated the elimination of three-tier system. Starting October 1, 2007, the TRS program will be administered through an updated site on the Guard and Reserve Web Portal.

  • To manage TRS enrollments starting on or after October 1, 2007, please follow this link:

    https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/appj/trs/

  • TRS will continue under the current tier system, with its three different premium levels, through Sept. 30, 2007. You may continue to use this site to manage any TRS enrollments in effect until that date.

I learned that this benefit does not extend to Federal Employees. It does not matter what your GS rating is. SO this morning while researching, I found out that we are INELIGIBLE.

However, I am hoping those of you in the National Guard and Reserves take advantage of this new benefit. We, as National Guard families, are being called on frequently. And I am not sure if we will continue to get benefits if we do not take advantage of them.
