Memorial Day 2009

We're milspouses. We know that Memorial Day isn't all about bbq's,big salesand the beginning of summer. We know that it's a day to remember those who gave all. Last year, I wrote a post about some of those people. It's found here. They and their families are very much in my thoughts as I write this.

I thought this yearthat I wouldwrite a post about ways that some people are honoring the intent of Memorial Day.

There is Remembering the Brave. Their mission statement says it all:a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the memories of brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice, and honoring their families in their time of enormous loss." They held a shotting match last weekend in Colorado and Lancelot was in attendance. Perhaps I'll have an AAR up soon about that.

Medically retired Marine Derek Zeier found an incredible way to honorhis brothers. Please take some time this weekend to watch the entire video. It's well worth it. As a postscript, he finished that race in 31 hours, 03 minutes and 21 seconds. o321 is the MOS code for Recon Marine. Very, very cool.

The boys at Blackfive and an amzing crew of people got together to form the Warrior Legacy Foundation. Check them out and please note that military spouses are encouraged to join as well as vets and troop supporters. This weekend is the official launch.

Sitting on my deck this morning, I heard a noise that reminded me of another great event happening this weekend. Rolling Thunder!!! Hearing the motorcycles rumble byis a sound that makes me smile as I think where they're going and what they're going to do.

I have only scratched the service on Memorial Day events and groups that honor the purpose of Memorial Day.so please feel free to add on in comments. Me? I've decided to go to Quantico National Cemetery. I've wanted to visit Col. Rish Higgins' grave for a long time and tomorrow seems the perfect day.

Whatever you are doing this weekend (and I do hope some of it is with family and friends), plesae take a minute to remember those who've given the ultimate sacrifice. It's our duty as the living. God knows, they've done theirs.

About SemperFi Wife

Semper Fi Wife has had a military ID card continuously since she was ten years-old. As an Air Force brat, she horrified her father and grandfather when she chose to marry one of the few and the proud.

Almost 25 years later, she is the wife of an OIF vet and the mother of an OIF/OEF vet.

While her motto has always been "Sanity is overrated", in her more lucid moments, she volunteers with Injured Marine Semper Fi fund as well as heads up her own very small military support organization called Honor Their Service.

Great post! It's so nice to know there are others that know what this holiday is all about.
I'll add to your list. Colonel John Folsom founded an orgazination to help the families of our wounded and injured family members. The organization is now called Wounded Warriors Family Support and provides retreats and vacations for wounded and their families. Everyone deserves to have a vacation and that family time together is an important step to recovery. Visit Wounded Warriors Family support at: woundedwarriorsfamilysupport.org

Each year, there is a Lantern Floating Ceremony in addition to the ceremonies up at Punchbowl National Cemetery.
It's such a beautiful way to remember those we have lost and those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I can live in this free country.

MD, Thank you so much for that. I am going to email Col. Folsom. What a great idea!!
HF6, Any way that you can take pictures of that? It does sound so beautiful.

Looks like we've had a change of plans – need to go hang out with a friend at the hospital tomorrow. You can find great pictures (better than anything I could ever take!) here –> http://www.lanternfloatinghawaii.com/photoAndMovi

A friend of mine attended Rolling Thunder…and took pictures…the one story she shared which I found amazing was the one of the saluting Marine. She managed to photograph him while riding by (yes, she and her Army Warrant Officer husband rode in the formation). Story on her blog, if you'd like to read it: http://suzannebalvanz.blogspot.com/2009/05/where-

  6. Great posting. I will continue to reference your site in the future. Veterans deserve to be rewarded for their hard work. The new post 9-1 GI bill provides assistance to veterans while they earn their online degrees
