Today the movie “Dear John” comes out in theaters. I read the book a couple of months ago and had mixed feelings about the ending. As a military spouse, any movie that might involve anything military automatically catches my attention. Nicholas Sparks? Double check. Channing Tatum in a military uniform? Triple check. Although as tempting as the trio was, I didn’t think I would want to see the movie based on the book’s ending but now that I can’t turn on the tv without coming across a commercial for it and hearing,
"Two weeks, that's all it took for me to fall for you.." and "I miss you so muchit hurts." .. quite frankly,I was hooked.
I have tosay that out of the all commercials I’ve seen from the movie and the photos on the official Facebook page (yes, I just admitted that) the part that caught my attention was the one of himsitting back, smile on his face, while he holds the letters and reads them. I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve pictured my guy doing the same thing. It’s not like I could have said, “Darling, is it possible for you to take a photo of yourself while reading one of the letters I sent?”
So ladies, (going out on a limb here and guessing our fellow male spouses aren’t in line for the first showing ) have you read the book? Without any spoilers being revealed, since I’m sure others might not have read it yet, did you like it? Are you planning on going to see the movie? Have you seen the movie and what did you think? I know I can’t be alone in wanting to see this movie. Well, at least, I hope not.

I have read the book, in fact I didn't read it until I saw a preview for the movie. I really liked the book and very excited to see the movie. Hubby and I are going to see it tomorrow… not sure he is as excited to see it as I am.
No offense meant, but I'm a male milspouse, and you're right: I couldn't even make it through the trailer. I hope you enjoy it though.
On the other hand, my wife was nice enough to join me on the opening night of 'Invictus'.
I'll probably wait until it comes out on video.
Robbo-DH saw Invictus when he got over there and said it was interesting. LOL
I didn't like the way the book ended so I probably won't go see it. I will just wait for it to come out on one of our movie channels.
I want to see this movie, but I don't know how I will react to it…My husband is currently deployed, and I just get the feeling I'm going to cry my eyes out!
I'll probably rent or buy it when it comes out on DVD, and watch it when my husband is home!
I haven't read the book. A bunch of us with depoloyed spouses are taking some boxes of kleenex and going in a group. I cried at one scene int he trailer ….
I read the book, the ending.. not so much. Will see it on DVD while hubby is away.
???Read??? Is it out in audio book yet? Dang, I still have real, paper, smelling like a library, books from "aught-four" that were started and then shelved when w o r k interfered …. sigh. I'll tell The Boss that yall have mixed emotions on the reviews?
Ohhh, now I don't know whether to read the book first, or simply go to the movie without reading it. DH is in the AOR — book now, movie later?
I read the book and I don't think I could watch the film without throwing something at the screen. And frankly, theatre popcorn is too good to waste!
I agree with you. I, too have mixed feelings on this particular movie. I did not, however know there was a book. With Afghanistan being such a common deployment, i think that it was a risky movie to make, but a heartwarming one too. I do want to go see it, despite knowing that it is more than likely in our future.
I saw this book in the grocery store and picked it up as soon as I saw the author. After I bought it the movie trailer started airing. I expected so much more from this book. It made me so angry and it was hard for me to get through it. I was dead set against going to see the movie but seeing the commercials has changed my mind. I hope its one of those instances where the movie is better than the book.
I have read the book, I thought it was great, the ending was sad but we don't always get that happy ending do we? I am told that the ending was changed from the original in the book for the movie.
I read The Notebook and vowed to avoid Nicholas Sparks forever after. If you're a fan of happy endings, as I am, skip the book. The movie is supposed to be less wrenching.
Read the book and liked it and did not know it was coming out as a movie. However I could really not see the book as a movie and the trailers are way different from the book – so I will most likely wait until it comes out on one of the non-paying movie TV stations.
I read the book and LOVED it, so I was way excited about the movie..I saw it the Saturday after opening night and was SO DISAPPOINTED! The movie was almost nothing like the book…First of all, the book was based in North Carolina and they had the movie set in South Carolina and that was just the beginning…I'm sure if you didn't read the book, then you would like the movie, but I just imagined the movie going in a whole different direction! Channing Tatum was beautiful, however, and was probably the best thing about the movie!
I have read the book and have seen the movie. The ending in the movie is different. I really enjoyed the book and the movie. Both were well worth my time.
Obviously there was no military personnel on the set of the movie or they would have caught the uniform areas that were so obviously displayed.
My husband and I went to see it the first week it came out, I havnt read the book. But frankly the movie pissed me off. I thought it would be a true love story but it ended up more wishywashy and the saddest part of the whole thing didnt even have to do with the military. It was interesting seeing the military from a hollywood perspective, but it just pushes my thoughts even futher into my head that your not truly a military wife/fiance/gf unless you stay with them through it all….. and lol to Colleens post. I actually saw his rank upside down a few times :P
halcat – I am a huge fan of happy endings. I almost gave up completely on reading anything written by Nicholas Sparks due to the heart wrenching endings until I read " The Lucky One " and interestingly enough it's also military related. Friends and I have made bets to see if they'll turn that one into a movie too. hehe
I read the book when it first came out and went to the movie on opening night with my teenaged daughters. We counted at least 5 different scenes that we all 3 cried at! We all loved the movie as well as the book, though the endings are different. I actually preferred the book's ending, because sometimes life doesn't work the way you want it to.
I read the book just a few weeks before the movie came out. I have to say if you have read it, you will really be suprised with the movie:) I have never read a book and then seen the movie before this and was really suprised how different the two can actually be. So I say go for it.
