Why We Love Naked Soldiers

Naked pictures of Prince Harry cavorting in Las Vegas made the press this week. Not that impressive. Not shocking either. Are we now going to see pictures of all the 28-year old, single guys cavorting in Vegas that weekend? Probably not.

Wrong answer. We forgot that Prince Harry is a soldier. In order to show solidarity with Prince Harry, thousands of nearly naked soldiers (and others) posted pictures of themselves on Facebook page “Support Prince Harry With a Naked Salute.” And it made all of us at SpouseBuzz laugh. We do love guys in (and out) of uniform. Join us in a break for the serious side of life while we tell you why:

- Opportunity to appreciate how Army training yields superior physical fitness.
- Opportunity to wish those who do not serve would take up Army fitness.
- New example of the phrase “They Can’t Fry Us All.”
- Ample illustrations of why tattoos never turn out as well as you hope.
- Ability to marvel at strategic use of a cupcake.
- Additional evidence that Rupert Murdoch just might be slipping.
- Student psychology project in the making:  why so many weapons over their privates?
- So much more fun than XBox on deployment
- Unalienable right of soldiers to put political silliness in perspective.

What a different tone in the article when it's men having fun being half-naked, instead of two mothers feeding their children in uniform.

    • June says:

      No kidding!

    • mel says:

I believe the difference is that , from what I saw, there weren't any photos of American servicemembers wearing parts of their uniforms inappropriately, ie. against regulations.

      • Damsel says:

Not sure I understand this response. These men definitely aren't following regulation by wearing only half of a uniform. The women, on the other hand, had the entire uniform on.

        • mel says:

In the above photo I don't believe that they are American servicemembers. I don't have any knowledge about the standards other countries have for their own servicemembers. The breastfeeding photo was of American servicemembers. Did you even check out the facebook site? There are photos of men AND women.

        • Old Guy says:

These men are standing right outside their tent while deployed. I don't really consider a military base in a deployed location a "Public area". The problem was the women were in public when they did the breast feeding in uniform. I have a few women under my authority and when they need to breast feed or pump they go into a room/office to do it.

Before you jump all over my @ss about breast feeding in public being OK, I agree. My wife breast fed our two boys in public and I see nothing wrong with that. My wife wasn't in uniform when she did it, only in civ attire. Uniformity is the life blood of the military and regulations keep us in that standard. Opening your shirt and pulling up your t-shirt in public does not follow the uniformity check and is against regs. I have no problem with mothers in uniform breast feeding, just not while in the public’s eye.

The more I think about it, the more irritated I get about this article. If any MALE wrote this type of an article about FEMALES, he would be blasted as sexist and a disgusting pig. Why is it okay for SpouseBUZZ, a partner of Military.com, to write something like this?? Answer: it's not. It's a double standard.

I'm pretty glad I stopped writing for you when I did.

Hi — thanks for your comment. One of the wonderful things about our site is the contribution of a variety of opinions from all different types of spouses.. Like the folks of Military.com who wrote this yesterday, http://undertheradar.military.com/2012/08/support… Jacey and I both found this particular Facebook page and reaction to the Prince Harry business to be really funny.

Military life is full of un-funny. We happily embrace the funny where and when we can.

You'll recall that the person who posted their reaction to the female breastfeeding incident was a male. He is completely entitled to his opinion, and we were happy to share it for him since it's a rare day that a male spouse wants to jump in the stewing pot of female spouse opinions. And can you blame them?

If someone would like to contribute a post criticizing Soldiers for posting mostly naked photos of themselves in support of the Prince, we'd be happy to consider running it.

      • Josh says:

You didn't address Damsel's issue at all with your response. The fact is there exists a double standard over issues like this. If a man were to write an article saying how much he enjoys looking at naked women, he would be attacked, but it seems A-OK for women to post what they want about men…seems a sad state.

      • Damsel says:

Key word: "consider". Seems that you have nothing to say to address the double-standard. I would bet quite a bit that if a male posted a picture of women posing similarly (say, with teeny-weeny, skimpy bikini tops on), and a list ridiculing them much like you have done to males in this article, you would take issue with it. With a title like "Why We Love Naked Women!", you most likely wouldn't post it.

It's just demeaning and crude. When someone embarrasses themselves, the bigger person politely ignores it, and the one who points it out to everyone else is obnoxious. You bring down your credentials to post something crass.

  3. Sarah says:

Everyone relax. It's funny. People getting naked to bring attention to something isn't new. A few months ago the article about women getting almost naked and writing on their bodies to bring attention to PTSD was also featured. Different cause, same concept. Get naked, people pay attention. Relax. This is funny and these guys are hot.

  4. Red says:

I'm kinda with Sarah here. I'm not sure I quite see the problem. Men showing off their bodies for attention, generally don't care if women drool a little bit. Women showing off for attention, lots of times get offended that they were oogled. That's the double standard. I don't see a problem admiring beautiful bodies of either sex, & I think it's also a bit different when it's done *in fun* by the 'models'.

    • Charlie says:

So, Sarah & Red, explain how you'd expect folks to react if it were a man writing an article with three naked female soldiers holding up another (in uniform) to cover their (possibly) exposed genitals in the photo that accompanies it.

I spent 21 years on active duty, so I get the humor of it. What I don't get is the obvious double standard. Please, please, please… explain why it's okay for women to do this but not men. I'm with Damsel on this one; if a man had done this with naked females pictured, he'd be fired.

      • Amy_Bushatz says:

I feel like maybe you guys didn't look at the Facebook page on which we based this post. There is no double standard here. If a gent spouse wants to find a Facebook page where women are posing almost entirely naked in support of another female acting like a naked moron in Las Vegas, he's welcome to write about it.

      • Sarah says:

I wouldn't be surprised, honestly. It's not a new phenomenon that men want to look at naked chicks. I am not the kind of woman who freaks out about it. I know it happens, and it has been happening since the start of mankind.
