Back Off the Naked COW

An Army National Guard unit at an obscure outpost in Alaska is under investigation after the commanding officer’s wife posed topless in a racy photo for a pin-up calendar (keep reading to see the actual photo).

The calendar, which was created for the American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life,” according to this Army Times story, has absolutely nothing to do with the military.

“This is obviously a fund-raising event as part of a private organization not associated with the military,” said John Cummings, a spokesman for SMDC/ARSTRAT, in the story, which originally reported the incident.

While we don’t have a copy of the photo to show you right now, you can go over here to see it.

OK, so maybe posing fairly naked for a charity calendar isn’t the most dignified thing a person could do. But since we keep hammering the fact that spouses have no rank and cannot, under any circumstances, be told by the military what to do in their personal lives, then this beautiful woman should be able to what ever she wants – and that includes stripping down for charity.

I’ll go ahead say it: back off the naked COW, folks.

The good news is that the military seems to be responding with a similar message. Even though the situation came to light after an email to high Army officials including Army Secretary John McHugh from a group calling themselves “Concerned Alaskans,” the story reports, the response from the parent unit is encouraging:

“As to the allegation on Mrs. Miley, the brigade commander has looked into this and has seen the photos,” [Commander of the battalion’s parent unit, Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Strategic Command, Lt. Gen. Richard Formica’s] email reads. “It was determined that, while risqué, the photos are not obscene or pornographic. Having looked at the ones attached to the email you received, I agree with that characterization.”

“In any event, Mrs. Miley is a spouse (not a service member) who participated in this fund-raising event as part of a private organization not associated with the military.”

Yes! That is exactly what should be said.

From what I can gather, the investigation into the unit is simply to make sure that no soldier there acted inappropriately. But a spouse? Can’t touch that. And that’s a good thing.

Wow I'm surprised this is even a thing. I don't care if shes stripping down for dollar bills. Shes not part of the military and if its legal and shes consenting than why the big deal?

  2. tasteful photo. awesome cause. and completely ridiculous reaction.

  3. Sarah says:

I think she looks gorgeous! People need to relax. She's not a stripper! Which by the way, if she was, who cares???? It's not YOUR problem or business!

  4. Jill sowder says:

I hope her husband is proud of the way she looks and the good taste in which the photo was taken. I also hope that he and all the higher ranking members of his unit are all supporting her and the cause she was representing! Good for her. “Wives of” have to stick together, we do not carry a rank or earn a military pay check. We do have to be diplomatic in our doings, and she did that. Again well done!

  5. Matt says:

People are stupid! Please focus on your own personal life than some officer's wife who wants to do something for a charity. Quit trying to cause harm and see if you can help some less fortunate people than yourselves! Atleast mind your own business.

  6. Guest says:

Sure, she can do whatever she wants. We all can. Doesn't mean it's right. Doesn't mean that it's not inappropriate.

    • proud2serve says:

Please. This wasn’t a playboy shot it was a tasteful photo with all her bits an peices hidden, for a good cause. There is nothing wrong with it.

    • Shannon says:

I completely agree. I have been told for years that my actions reflect on my husband and his career. This just shows that if your husband has enough rank, anything will be forgiven. Her behavior and the picture is inappropriate.

      • Guest says:

The only spouses who say their behavior reflects on their husbands are the ones who are dissillusioned and want to believe it. Trust me, you don't matter. I got a dui and a two months later my husband got promoted. Not proud of it but proves my point. Get your head out of your behind.

      • Petra says:

Told by whom? Your husband? Because I'm pretty sure it wasn't his command who told you that…

      • Candice says:

Inappropriate? Really? If that's your opinion, then fine, but I hope you feel the same way about Victoria's Secret commercials and the majority of bathing suits at the pool. I see more cleavage ad butt cheeks there than I do in this photo!

  7. NJARNG says:

The military sure changed. In my day you’d be Court Martial, for disrespecting the commanding officer’s wife. Not everyone wants their wife as a pin up doll, as eye candy for ***** soldiers. FIRE IN THE HOLE.

  8. NJARNG says:

The H word not F…it blocked it

  9. NJARNG says:

(Horn*) y is the word! Wow I am having more trouble saying an innocent word, than publishing a risky picture. Uumm.

  10. NJARNG says:

May be I got this wrong. What she does off post, with non military, IS her business. But, not on the mess hall’s wall.

  11. Doug says:

I see more skin than that at the mall.

  12. SGM Bob says:

Frankly, I don't give a good rat's a** how this commander's wife poses now or in the future. What I do care about is this: Spouses claim to have the same rights and responsibilities as the service members — but they balk at having the same sets of standards imposed upon them. I suppose we could rewrite the AR 670-1 (Army Regulation) to be ASR 6 70-1 (Army Spouse Regulation). I expect MASH's Maxwell Q. Klinger would love that……. Lay off the spouses. It's damn difficult to find a good one who will put up with their non-life n the military. As a commander once asked me — "Did the Army issue you a wife?" Yes, he did actually ask me that question!

  13. BRASS says:

That's not naked or nearly naked. The indicated picture is less revealing than your average bikini on the beach.

    What's the fuss?

  14. spouse2000 says:

So many woman say they are serving, they are part of the military – but now not so much. Stop wanting it both ways.

  15. YellowRoseOTx says:

I've seen bikini's that show MUCH more. I still find her behavior questionable (I personally, as a spouse would not do it), but that's between her and her husband. And they are ARRRRRRMMMY. That about covers it.

    • Candice says:

So tastefully posing in more clothing than a bikini (your words) for a fundraiser to help cancer patients is "questionable" behavior? I think you should learn how to ask better questions!

And yes, that gorgeous, physically fit woman is an ARRRRRMMMY wife! HOOAH!

      • SemperFi says:

im a Marine wife… with an Army mom/dad/sister…. great post, great cause, no "question"

  16. leeuhnotlayuh says:

Girls just wanna have fun! Lay off! I mean if it were the guys doing this, everyone would call them studs. But since it's a wife, she's taking the heat….

  17. Buzzy B says:

Big Deal. I have seen more in the Grocery Store than this.
