Awesome Christmas Decoration Contest for Military

While it gives me great pain to talk about Christmas in the middle of September, let’s go ahead and admit it – you’re probably already thinking about the holidays, just like me.

This year we’re going to be minus our resident Soldier over the Blessed Day, and I can already feel the Humbug creeping into my soul. Were it not for my two cherubs who will, with faces bright with anticipation, be eagerly awaiting the merry-making, I would be tempted to boycott the whole thing.

Lucky for us scowley types, one company already has a handle on making sure the Christmas of at least some servicemember families is merry, bright and well decorated. Each year the folks at Christmas Décor hold a contest to select military homes across the country for outside Christmas decoration. This year they expect to choose about 200.

You know some twinkle lights in your Christmas life can’t hurt.

The families are chosen based on nominations, which you can submit through the Christmas Decor Facebook page, as well as providing the same information requested on that form through via email to this address: decoratedfamily@thedecorgroup.com.

An official representing Christmas Décor said since they rely entirely upon the nominations to pick the homes, you should aim to make it as compelling as possible. But writing a really long essay will probably hurt you in the long run, she said, since they’ll be reading hundreds of nominations and don’t really have time to read the extended version of why you or your friend need rad Christmas lights.

Makes sense to me.

The contest is open to anyone with a military affiliation – that’s parents of servicemembers, former serivcemembers, active, Guard, Reserve, retired and direct dependents. Everyone!

Nominations are due by Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. “Winners are awarded based on their location … and the impact of their story on the judge,” according to a release.  (The location thing is to make sure there is a Christmas Décor decorator nearby to actually do the work.)

Good luck – and God bless us, everyone!
