New Heartbeat Ring: Comfort or Worry?

I'm just going to go ahead and say it: this feel your spouse's heartbeat through a ring business makes me nervous.

This ring system is making the social media rounds this month. The concept is pretty simple: you sync your rings, connect to Bluetooth and the ring's app and, as long as you are both connected, you can activate the ring and feel the other person's heartbeat.

You can see how this could be kind of fun, especially if you were in a long distance relationship with a reliable solid data connection.

But for those of us whose partners are in the military? A heartbeat connection sounds like something that is just going to cause anxiety.

First of all, war zones and military assets aren't exactly known for their awesome data connections. Same thing goes for training areas or pretty much anywhere that the military is likely to take your service member for an extended period of time. Heck, even most of the unit areas my husband has worked in have terrible cell signals, forget wifi.

But let's assume he or she does have a connection when back in their room or base while deployed. Do  you really want to spend all your time wondering why the ring isn't connected or why the heartbeat connection has suddenly dropped -- or why his heart is suddenly racing?

I don't.

This isn't the first time something like this has been advertised -- although it is the first I've heard of it actually working. In 2012 a company advertised a heartbeat pillow as "coming soon," although there were no specific details on how it worked.

If you still think this is a good idea, you can pre-order your ring now. Gold ones are $3,000 for the pair, and the stainless steel version runs $600 for both. They come with charging stations. At the time of this writing, 564 orders had been made as part of the pre-order roll-out, according to the website.
